Manju (Name Changed) is a 16 years old Girl lives with her grandparents (who are very old) in a village in Gorubathan block of Kalimpong district. She was abandoned by her parents as her father and mother was separated. Her mother later involved in another to marital relations and now stays and work at Gangtok, Sikkim and take no care of her daughter.

Manju gets involved in love affair with a neighboring young man and they secretly got married. They have started to stay as husband and wife and as a result Manju got pregnant. When she got pregnant her husband went to GOA in search of work.

SPAN community social worker (CSW) during her visit to the village found Manju who looks like  very weak in health and probably bearing child. When enquired Manju denied about her pregnancy and about her marriage and told that she is suffering from Jaundice. SPAN’s CSW became doubtful about her answer and contacted local Anganwadi Worker and ASHA Worker. The CSW has taken Manju for a Health Check up along with the Anganwadi worker and Asha Worker at Block primary Health centre where she found Pregnant for seven month. Later under counseling she disclosed about her marriage.

Immediately an FIR was lodged in local police station and Manju’s so called husband who is 19/20 years old arrested from Goa. He is now in Jail custody and under trial.

Manju very recently give birth of a child. As there is no one to take care of Manju. She is staying with her child in her grand Parents home. SPAN is taking Manju regularly for Counseling at Anwesha clinic while arranging nutritional support for herself and her child. Manju is in dire need of financial support. SPAN is pursuing with DCPO and DALSA for filing application for her compensation. The challenges in the most of POCSO cases the compensation filing process has been delayed by DALSA – reasons no known.

But the marriage which was done secretly has no value as of now.
