Ambiya’s Journey from Child Labour to Classroom

Home   /  Case Study Details

In the bustling roadside squatter settlements of Narkeldanga, Kolkata, 11-year-old Ambiya Khatoon lives a life far beyond her time. She studies in class V in a local Primary school ‘SubhashVisdyamandir’. By 8:00 AM, she would be at work as a domestic helper in a nearby apartment—washing dishes, doing laundry, and earning just ₹20–30 a day. Ambiya lives with her mother, grandmother, two sisters, and a brother. Her mother works in a local nail polish factory, the only earner in the family after her father abandoned the family. To provide support to her mother and contributing to family’s financial need she balances both school and work simultaneously. Apart from her daily engagements she occasionally receives extra money and clothes during festivals like Eid. However, her earnings are often spent quickly to meet immediate household needs. After finishing her morning chores, she would attend class, then return home to fetch water and help with household tasks. The burden of these responsibilities affects Ambiya’s education. The economic hardships her family faces further worsens the situation, making it challenging for her to focus on her education and personal growth.

Recognizing these challenges, the SPAN team began working closely with Ambiya and her family, encouraging them to prioritize her education. She was enrolled in a children’s group facilitated by SPAN, where she learned about child rights, the importance of education, and most importantly, found a space where she could share her thoughts, dreams, and aspirations.SPAN worked with her mother and other adults in the community, sensitizing them to the harmful impacts of child labour. They also mobilized local stakeholders—including school teachers and ward councilors—advocating for Ambiya’s right to an uninterrupted education.

Through persistent efforts , consistent support and encouragement ,Ambia has recently discontinued her domestic work and is now fully committed to her studies. She now attends school as a full-time student, a significant step toward a brighter future.

Our mission remains steadfast—to support Ambiya and her family so that they can overcome their economic struggles without compromising her education. Ambiya’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of encouragement and support, and we are committed to help her in achieving  her dreams.

SPAN continues to stand beside Ambiya and her family, helping them navigates economic challenges while ensuring that her education remains a top priority.
