Local women council members and mother’s group are capacitated on Reproductive and child health and Early Childhood Care and Development with the help of ASHA workers, Anganwadi Workers and ANM to supplement the effort Anganwadi. They identified severely Mal-nutrient children and sending them for special care in NRC, organize vegetable garden at their home to meet up the need of supplementary nutrition for their children,  they demanded for infrastructure and proper functioning of their local Anganwadi centres and monitor the functioning of local Anganwadi Centre.

Alipurduar and Coochbehar – Women council member regularly visit local Anganwadi centre and check quality of the food distributed as supplementary nutrition.

South 24 Parganas - The youth and women council members have identified cases of child malnutrition among family members of council and discussed their condition with

ICDS workers to improve the children’s health. The council members also held discussions with ICDS workers on child and maternal nutrition and health.

Purulia – Women council members are trained on child Nutrition and survival issues. They cultivated vegetables on the land adjacent to their home (Kitchen Garden) to supplement nutrition of their children. They also involved in identifying severely malnourished children of their village along with Anganwadi workers and ASHA Workers and send those children to NRC (nutrition rehabilitation centre) for special care.

In many marginalized households, women bear the triple burden of unpaid housework, childcare, and low-wage informal labor. Without safe, reliable childcare, working mothers face an impossible choice between earning a living and protecting their children.

PHULJHURI is SPAN’s flagship Crèche Program designed for children aged 6 months to 6 years from informal workers' families. By providing accessible, high-quality care, PHULJHURI turns women-led development into reality—giving mothers peace of mind while securing a bright start for their children.

Our Reach

We currently operate 5 crèches supporting 185 children across West Bengal:

• Tea Garden Crèches (Jalpaiguri & Darjeeling): 3 centers serving 90 children of tea laborers across the Kalagatti, Washabari, and Gulma Tea Gardens (in partnership with local Management).

• Urban Crèches (North 24 Parganas):

  • New Town, Kolkata: Serves 40 children in collaboration with NKDA.

  • Barrackpore Municipality: Serves 55 children of urban informal workers.

What We Provide

Every PHULJHURI center is staffed by trained caregivers and educators who deliver comprehensive, holistic support:

1. Nutrition & Growth

• 3 Daily Meals: Fresh breakfast, lunch, and evening snacks.

• Targeted Care: Extra nutrition for children falling below standard growth milestones.

2. Health, Safety & Hygiene

• Medical Care: Monthly physician checkups and follow-up treatments.

• Growth Tracking: Regular height/weight monitoring, health card maintenance, and age-appropriate immunization tracking.

• Parental Guidance: Workshops on home hygiene and healthy nutrition habits.

3. Play & Curriculum-Based Learning

• Crèche (Under 3): Activity-based learning through Khelpitara, physical play, music, and dance.

• Balwadi (Ages 3–6): Early education structured around core themes like Self & Family, Homes, Animals, and Nature, paired with creative arts.

4. Community & Parental Engagement

• Family Support: Regular Focus Group Discussions, parenting workshops, and maternal health support for pregnant mothers.

• Sathi Samuha: Active parent-teacher platforms and youth volunteer initiatives that keep families directly involved in center activities and community care.
